MORE ABOUT DOLPO REGION:
Trekking to the sacred Phoksundo Lake is a privilege few foreigners have enjoyed due to the regions/ choosier until year 2000. Some only visit this rugged and remote section of Central-West Nepal. From near Pokhara, we'll set off for Dhorpatan, following an old trade route through picturesque farmlands and hamlets. The weeklong hike to Tarakot, an early hilltop fort site, crosses through desolate landscape before turning north. We'll soon gain sight of Phoksundo Lake's turquoise water set amidst a stark and stunning Tibet-like landscape. Sharp rock pinnacle pierce the clear sky, and a short hike to al lofty lookout reveals the surrounding Himalayas, Kanjiroba (6,883m.). Shey Phoksundo National Park protects this habitat of the snow leopard and other rare Himalayan fauna. At 3,600 m. hardy mountain people survive on barley, wheat and yak by-products, still practicing the ancient Bo religion of Tibet. The exit trail continues westward to Jumla, from where a plane will sweep us back to Kathmandu.
