MORE ABOUT MUSTANG:
At 3555 sq.km. Shey-Phoksundo National Park is Nepal's largest. Situated
in the mountains of western Nepal touching the Tibetan region and dominated
by Kanjiroba Himal, the main objectives of gazetting the park are to preserve
the unique trans-Himalayan ecosystem with its typical Tibetan type of fauna
and flora. People here are Tibetan in origin and their way of life and spoken
language reflects this ancestral lineage. At one time, to more fully integrate
the children into Nepal's national identity, small ones were given thoroughly
Nepalese surnames while attending school. This practice has now stopped,
but most people here have adopted the Nepalese ethnic names of Gurung, Lama,
and Thakuri to fully illustrate their alliance. Visitors are quick to notice
the bone and web protectors hung over each doorway to ward off evil influences.
