MORE ABOUT MANASLU:
Manaslu, at 8,163 m. 8th highest in the world, is known among climbers
as Killer peak for its soaring summit surrounded by dramatic slopes meandering
down to lush green valleys and meadows. Trek takes in its entirely, beginning
in Gorkha, 18th century east of the Kingdom of Nepal. The trail drops
to the East to the tropical Buri Gandai River through Gurung and Tamang
villages shaded by spreading pipal trees. In the highest valley beyond
Samagaon, mountain people eke out a lining with the barest of essentials
and a deep faith in their gods. Stones carved with images of the 11th
century Buddisth poet Milerapa show where he meditated. Ahead lies 5,200
m. Larkya La Pass reaching within 10 kms of the Tibet boarder. Beyond
the Pass, the route descends more quickly to the Marsyangdi River, and
again climbs to the historic and scenic town of Ghanpohara. A lakeside
camp at Begnas Tal concludes this spectacular Nepal trek with a taste
of Tibet.
Trekking around Manaslu offers a unique opportunity to experience a relatively
untouched region of Nepal. Located in west-central Nepal, the 177 km trek
around Manaslu provides strong walkers the best that Nepal has to offer:
fantastic mountain scenery spanning altitudes from 375 m to 5300 m, a
diverse range of eco-systems and ethnic cultures, and a trail that puts
one physically closer to Tibet than any other trek in Nepal. Crossing
the Larkya La takes two days. It is a steep trail winding around with
views looking down on the remains of Larkya Bazaar. After 3 hours you
reach the final campsite before the pass. Phede (base camp) or Duwang
(4,450m), which consists of one stone shelter and several temporary ones.
Camp is located in the Bimthang Valley (3700m); an enchanting meadow nestled
beneath Phungi Himal and Manaslu's northwest face. The next morning there
is a crossing of the Himlung Glacier and a bit of scrambling across the
rubble which has been pushed on the top. Consinuing to drop, the trail
enters a tranquil pine and rhododendron forest with frequent clearings
affording excellent views back to Manaslu.
