From the fertile Kullu valley, we drive into the arid landscape of Spiti, closed to outsiders until 1994. Here we visit ancient monasteries such as Dhankar and Tabo which is celebrating its 1003 anniversary in 1999. On the journey to Leh, we pass two of Chantang's great inland seas, Tso Morris and Tso Kar and three major passes, one lies at over 18'000 feet and is a formidable barrier. Reserve early to avoid disappointment.
