Not so long ago expeditions hiked up all the way from Kathmandu to Everest Base Camp a good months's walk even before the climbing began. We'll share that same route but with short-cut drive to Jiri. From there, the trails head Eastward through the lovely forested hills to Solu, and over 3,000 metre Passes. From the top of Pike Peak (4,065 metres) Everest and the Kahumbu range lure us onward. By Namche Bazaar, we're in good shape for higher reaches; for monasteries and uninterrupted mountain views lie beyond Thyangboche, a YETI scalp and hand are kept for viewing. A side trip to the Sherpa settlement of Dingboche reveals the back-side of Ama Dablam. At Everest Base Camp (5,357m.) we may encounter expedition climbers and from the rocky summit of Kalapattar (5,545m.) we'll marvel at the close up views of Everest and its giant neighbors. Return to Lukla from the flight to Kathmandu, and some city adventures.
