This is an ideal trek for mountain lovers with a sense of expeditionary lore. Machapuchhare's Southern Base Camp (4000m.) is our destination, once the take-off point for climbing attempts on this singular peak which is now restricted as a seat of the gods. Far from crowds and at middle elevations suited to all trekkers, this trail introduces the traditional hill- side of the high spirited Gurung people. Their love of music and dance is infectious, spreading to the evening campsites occasionally. Heading northeast from Pokhara, we'll then encounter the Annapurna Massif with better views of Machahpuchares' perfect pyramid peak. Two days at base camp afford further exploration or time to rest amidst the mountain serenity. This is what trekking is all about ! We'll return to the lively market town of Pokhara via Ghanchok, and the next day to Kathmandu, with its ethnic faces, living goddesses and legends galore.
